Earlier this month, the API Innovation Center had the privilege of participating in the Axios “Addressing America’s Drug Shortage Problem” Roundtable in Washington, D.C. This event shed light on the ongoing shortages of generic drugs in the U.S., highlighting the complex factors contributing to this critical issue, including pricing, increased demand, and supply chain challenges.

Kevin Webb, Chief Operating Officer of the API Innovation Center, emphasized the vital role of bolstering domestic manufacturing for essential medications, stating, “There’s probably a core set of molecules that we can all agree with: these are in our public health and our national security to bring back to manufacture.”

Experts at the roundtable stressed the need for policy reforms to rebalance market power and ensure sustainable prices that support resilient drug production. Investing in robust domestic supply chains was underscored as a crucial step toward solving the drug shortage crisis.
