The API Innovation Center (APIIC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enabling the delivery of market-competitive commercial supply of U.S.-made active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) to address national health security.

What is an API?
According to the FDA, an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is “any substance or mixture of substances intended to be used in the manufacture of a drug product and that, when used in the production of a drug, becomes an active ingredient in the drug product.”

Mission
Goals of the APIIC:
- Leverage the region’s strengths in bioscience, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing.
- Bolster high-growth entrepreneurship and technology innovation.
- Support target business retention and expansion activities.
- Develop and expand workforce development programs that focus on technical education.
The APIIC and its members are working to achieve its goals through these four key pillars:
Collaboration
Fostering collaboration among a network of companies, academic and research institutions, and startups spanning the API advanced manufacturing supply chain.
INNOVATION
Enable the commercialization of advanced manufacturing technologies in cGMP facilities to produce essential and critical medicines in shortage within 24 months.
RESEARCH
Develop solutions for shared emergent challenges that leads to new technologies and methods.
Workforce development
Creates a diverse talent pipeline by partnering with local educational and apprenticeship programs that focus on technical education.
